Being a women-owned and WBENC-certified business are more than titles for GROEBNER.
Being a women-owned and WBENC-certified business are more than titles for GROEBNER. It signifies a commitment to fostering a culture of empowerment, inclusion, and leadership. As President and owner, Carissa Skorczewski understands the significance of this role, both personally and professionally.
"To be a part of and to be an owner of a women-owned business means we provide new perspectives, especially in the energy industry," Carissa shared. "I've worked in male-dominated fields most of my career, and I always value different perspectives. Having a female’s perspective and learning from the challenges they’ve faced helps us continue to grow, collaborate in new ways, and work together differently. I love being part of this industry and continuing to get more women involved in the energy sector."
One of Carissa’s proudest moments as a leader was receiving GROEBNER’s WBENC certification. "Going through the process, the interviews, and knowing that we were receiving this gold standard of a diverse business – it makes me really proud to see that certification on our wall." Additionally, she takes immense pride in mentoring and supporting women entering the industry, particularly when she can introduce them to their first MEA Energetic Women’s Conference.
Creating a Culture of Support and Growth
For many women at GROEBNER, working for a women-owned business is a source of pride and validation. Senior Manager of Customer Care, Jana Darling, believes that having a leader who understands and shares the experiences of women in the workplace creates a space for growth and opportunity.
"Working for a women-owned business is validation that women can and do have the qualifications, knowledge, and experience to lead a company, even in male-dominated industries," Jana said. "Having a leader that shares those perspectives allows for the development and involvement of all the women within her team."
Jessica Siegrist, Director of Corporate Operations, highlights the importance of a workplace culture that fosters collaboration and encouragement. "Being part of a women-owned business empowers me and encourages other women to step up, take on leadership roles, and push forward with confidence. Women bring a unique level of compassion to the workplace, allowing us to understand challenges in-depth and find solutions together. That supportive environment makes a meaningful difference in our success."
Empowered Women, Empowering Others
One of the most rewarding aspects of working at GROEBNER is the opportunity to lift others up. Women across the company find empowerment in their roles, whether it’s mentoring colleagues, supporting customers, or attending industry events that celebrate and advance women in energy.
Customer Care Representative, Jennifer Dugenia, recalls a defining moment at the Energetic Women’s Conference: "It was motivating to see so many accomplished women in our field. It’s encouraging to witness the change happening in our industry."
For Alice Zak, our Illinois Senior Branch Manager, empowerment happens every day when she’s at work. "I feel empowered because I’m surrounded by women who rely on me for advice and help with their roles, and even better, I rely on them for the same thing."
Martha Penaloza, a Customer Care Representative, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of fostering a supportive environment: "Our presence is not overlooked. I feel seen and heard in a male-dominated industry. The opportunities I have today are because of the sacrifices of the women before me."
Advice for Future Generations
As we celebrate Women's History Month and those who have pushed for and paved a path, the women of GROEBNER also want to share their advice for those looking to grow in their professional careers.
Carissa encourages women to explore the diverse opportunities available: "I think a lot of women don’t realize that the energy industry can be a really exciting career path in all different areas – from administration to outside sales, finance to customer service. Network, meet different people, go to trade shows, attend conferences, and continue your personal development. Build other women up and keep looking for new opportunities to shine and grow together."
"Stay persistent and confident in your skills," Alice advised. "Your perspective is valuable."
"Speak up," Jana encouraged. "Make your voice heard, seek out mentorship, and never be afraid to learn."
Jessica reinforced the importance of self-advocacy: "Push forward, advocate for yourself, and never stop fighting for your future."
Building a Workplace That Supports Women
True progress comes from workplaces that actively support women's advancement. Providing leadership opportunities, recognizing the value of diverse perspectives, and promoting work-life balance are all crucial.
GROEBNER remains committed to creating an environment where women can thrive, lead, and inspire. As we celebrate Women's History Month, we honor the incredible women who make a difference in our company and our industry every day. Their contributions, mentorship, and leadership are shaping the future not just for GROEBNER, but for the entire energy sector.
This commitment extends beyond this month. It is an ongoing effort to cultivate a workplace where women are empowered to lead, innovate, and uplift one another. Whether through mentorship, professional development, or simply fostering a culture of inclusion, we continue to strengthen the foundation for future generations. Together, we are shaping a more inclusive and dynamic energy industry, one where every woman has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
